The truth is better than a lie in the long haul of helping animals

I believe that it's a sorry idea to help animals using these tactics:

  • showing horrendous films of slaughter
  • scaring the people with the fear of heart disease
  • promising people with glorious health

Why? Because it's the fear and carrot dangling tactics employed by religion. Religion sucks. (Buddhism is not a religion!)

And the last two points are lies (see links at the bottom).

Most people, or anyone I'd like to know, reject fear tactics at some point in their life.

Plus, when some individuals experience health issues from some version of a vegan diet such as hair loss, tooth decay, and depression (which I feel is the worst of all), they are likely to never come back to a vegan diet or anything close.

Depression affects so many things, so being depressed can be excruciating all by itself, even if you don't get cavities, hair loss, or other health issues.

I believe that if you want a lot of people to reduce animal product consumption, appeal to the hearts of humans with the truth in a matter of fact way or pleasant way:
  • Show cute pictures of pigs, cows, chickens (especially chickens) with messages like:
    Image of Chicks, Piglets, and Kittens (cute explosion)
    I love animals so I am exploring more meat free options these days.
            — Some person
  • Explain that there is no one-size-fits all diet for anyone, we are all different inside.
  • Encourage experimenting with your current diet to reduce meat, dairy, eggs as much as you can without affecting your health and adding more dark leafy greens.
  • Talk about how being purest & holier-than-thou is not good for animals or gaining friends.
  • Use coconut fat (1-2 tbs a day).
  • Remove sugar and fake sugar*.
  • Don't use the word vegan or vegetarian, use the term "animal friendly lifestyle".
Removing sugar actually will reduce heart disease risk.

Vegan Tooth Decay, Cavities on a low fat vegan diet.

Haven't had a cavity since I was 12 ( and I suspect that was not a cavity... and I am now 40). However, since being totally clean gluten-free, very low fat vegan for the past 18 months, just had my dental check up and had SIX cavities!!!!!!!!!! What the heck?!!!!!!! I find this all very interesting. I guess I need to add olive oil back? What about oil pulling?




  1. If you want to stop the tooth decay, seriously take K2 and D3 (d3 is not vegan usually). These will improve your teeth significantly along with saturated fat which I would take at the same time. DEFINITELY eat saturated fat in the form of coconut fat. 1 tablespoon a day I what I aim for.

    Also increasing phosphorous while you do the above.

    Teeth are not as strong as bones, imagine what a low fat vegan diet does to bones! I eat a vegan diet with saturated fat, no sugar. Brush with baking soda. Make sure you don't drink just fruit juice, you eat the actual fruit with the fiber.

    High fat way to end decay

    For years we've been told fat is bad for us, but now scientists say it could save you a trip to the dentist by helping fight tooth decay.

    THE Atkins diet claims you can eat all the fat you want and still lose weight, and now scientists claim grease could prevent tooth decay.

    According to a paper published in the dental journal Caries Research, fat and oils can actually strengthen teeth by protecting against demineralisation.

    In the study, some teeth were dipped in olive oil or plain water before being placed in the sort of acid conditions that cause tooth decay.

    The teeth coated in oil were significantly protected from demineralisation and cavity formation.

    Dr Wolfgang Buchalla of Georg-August University in Gottingen, Germany, who conducted the research, says: "We found that fats significantly reduce tooth demineralisation, while studies on animals have found that incorporating five per cent of oil in a caries-forming diet can reduce tooth decay."

    Caries-forming diets are typically weight-loss regimes which are high in carbohydrates but low in fat.

    Bacteria in the mouth quickly turn foods such as bread, crisps, potatoes or sugar to acid, which can remain in the mouth for hours, dissolving minerals from teeth. Animal fats such as those in butter and cheese, and plant oils such as olive oil are thought to work by neutralising acid as well as placing a protective film over the teeth, to prevent erosion.

    The findings mean that eating oily fish and nuts, cheese or salad dressed in oils throughout the day could protect against the tooth-weakening effect of carbohydrates and sweets.

    "Foods rich in starch and sugar but low in fat are especially dangerous," says Dr Maria Rodriguez, Professor of Dentistry at the University of Madrid, who is researching the effects of oils on teeth. Eating low-fat crisps and rice crackers as snacks is as bad as eating sugary foods or chocolate regularly, as they make the saliva dramatically more acid for long periods of time.

    However, if you balance carbs with fat or protein - for example by eating an egg on toast or chicken with potatoes - you will not be damaging teeth because the fat exerts a protective effect. If you eat a sugary dessert, you can prevent any damage it might do to teeth by finishing off with some cheese.

    Ultimately, the best diet for teeth is one that's low in carbs and sugar and high in fat and protein. While that sounds unhealthy, it isn't. The fat and protein should come from olive oil, fish, cheese and nuts. And by adding 'neutral' foods such as vegetables, you have a very healthy diet for your body and your teeth.

    So far, research has focused on olive oil after it was noticed residents of Spanish towns which make olive oil have abnormally low levels of tooth decay and gum disease.

    "Studies subsequently revealed that olive oil works internally and externally to protect teeth," explains Dr Rodriguez.

    "Apart from lowering acidity, olive oil attaches to bacteria and washes them away. Then, when you swallow olive oil, its high levels of oleic acid and vitamin A promote bone and tooth mineralisation, strengthening your teeth and jaw," she says.

    Olive oil is proving so effective at keeping teeth strong, it has been incorporated into a brand of toothpaste, Airlift, which is sold in Boots.

    And Dr Rodriguez believes other toothpaste makers will soon follow suit. She says: "Because of the benefits, it wouldn't surprise me if in five or 10 years most major toothpaste brands include some sort of fat or oil."

    The British Dental Association welcomes the findings. "Research into the effect of fats on teeth is just beginning and it seems promising," says a spokesman. "However, fluoride is still the best way of keeping teeth strong."

    According to the food experts there are acid-forming types which weaken teeth, neutrals foods and those that actively fight tooth decay. So which foods should you eat and which should you avoid?

    Top acid-formers

    Grapes, sweet nuts such as cashews and almonds, crackers, milk chocolate, crisps, white bread.

    Neutrals

    Cauliflower, cucumber, carrots, meat, fish, ham, walnuts and Brazil nuts, unsweetened popcorn.

Do it!

Even when I ate pork chops for dinner, I never ate sea animals. I think shrimp is just nasty, lobster is a relative of a cockroach, and I am just plain grossed out by juices of the fish, or oil of the fish, so I really am happy that this DHA oil from Algae is available. I stocked up and keep it in the fridge.

Thinking of giving up your vegan diet?

I have been a vegan, quasi if you want to nitpick 2 eggs a year on average for the past few years, for 7 years now. I have no reason to change as this diet works well for me and it helps me put in to action my empathy for my fellow beings. Plus, I don't have a craving for meat, dairy, or eggs. If I did have a craving, I would eat. However, because of my feelings for animals and I dig nutrition, I'd figure out why and how I could avoid it, if possible, (such as take a taurine supplement, increase my protein, add more fat, or whatever). But that's me.

Cravings are important to listen to. When I was pregnant, I was a vegetarian, but mostly a cheesatarian. Prior to pregnancy, I didn't eat eggs too often. When I was pregnant, I craved eggs and ate 8 per day. Nice sentence. Later I found out that eggs have some very important nutrients for the developing brain: ARA and choline.

My honor roll (;-) daughter, whom I don't insist, pressure, or otherwise cajole into becoming a vegan, loves eggs and cheese. The main reason I don't bother is that it's a form of violence to force one's own individual ethics and/or religion onto others. They will sooner or later rebel and resent it and you.

Let's look at religion for a moment. Drugs, alcohol, sex, etc., when these things seen as "forbidden" then many people (those who don't understand why with an accompanying spiritual or inner belief that is not mere lip service) will eventually indulge or even worse, such as the murder and rape of women when a zealot bunch of assholes tell them that women should be covered from head to toe and if they are not, it's okay to rape, beat, and murder them because they were asking for it. Yes, indeed, it's pretty nasty and has nothing to do with Islam. BTW, purdah was an early Byzantine Christian custom for upper class women. Long story.

Anyway, religion, when incorrectly understood, doesn't unite, it divides and it promotes self incrimination in the form of guilt and shame and worse. Sometimes that guilt and shame is directed outwards and it harms other people too. Vegan-ISM is no different in some respects because when wrongly followed it can turn people inclined that way toward zealotry, judgementalness, cliquishness, and all kinds of ego trips. Animals do not benefit from holier than thou-ness.

Back to the health stuff...

I have met ex-vegans either in person or online and have found common health issues that could, possibly, be addressed for many people (providing they don't have a genetic need for some cholesterol see my interview at Let Them Eat Meat or can't convert RAEs to vitamin A sufficiently — yep, folks, some people just can't eat carrots and make adequate enough levels of A for their needs).

How to, possibly, address cravings or feeling tired, brain foggy on the vegan diet?

  • Drop the low fat mantra and go for the middle path.
  • Increase your saturated fat in the form of coconut oil*.
  • Cook your veggies with this fat to increase your absorption of the vitamins and minerals.
  • Lay off alcohol, sugar, and splenda so you don't screw up your beneficial gut microbes.
  • Increase your absorption of the nutrients in your food by increasing your pancreatic enzymes
  • Increase your absorption of the nutrients in food: take some broad spectrum probiotics and rotate them every month with different brands and strains
  • Read and apply Vegan for Life's guidelines (for the most part)
  • Read and follow Jack Norris' increased protein recommendations
  • Add D3 or make sure you are getting good levels natural sunshine. (Read the comments on that link, they are helpful!)
  • Add K2 (MK-7) to your supplements or start eating natto.
  • Understand that everyone has individual dispositions. Each person's ability to absorb and convert vary. We are not all the same inside. Read this article about that.
  • Add iodized salt and check your thyroid. Take safe levels of bioavailable selenium. If you get your iodine from sea veggies, check to see that they do have it, many organic brands are not grown in the ocean water and don't. And I don't blame them, many toxins in the ocean these days. Note on the selenium, I have not found the SeMSC selenium in a veg cap, I bought empty v-caps and stick stuff in that.
  • Take a choline supplement.

*As for the human feces that fat (saturated), meat, dairy, or eggs are harmful to your biological heart due to LDL cholesterol, that is simply not true. If you really love animals and your motivation for eating vegan is based on love and not ethics, I feel, then it's likely bad for your heart of hearts if you go against your own conscious, but that's a different story.

As for LDL cholesterol: It's sugar and stress that are the culprits here.

Sugar or fructose, separated from the fruit, manufactures the sticky MGmin-LDL cholesterol. The addition of sugar groups to ‘normal’ LDL making LDL smaller and denser. The sugar groups expose new regions on the surface of the LDL. These exposed regions are more likely to stick to artery walls, helping to build fatty plaques. As fatty plaques grow they narrow arteries — reducing blood flow — and they can eventually rupture, triggering a blood clot that causes a heart attack or stroke. Oh we’ve been severely misinformed that LDL cholesterol is bad. It isn’t. There’s a light buoyant kind of LDL, it’s harmless, and then there’s the sticky crap from sugar. They are not measured separately. The only way to see your risk for heart disease is not your LDL cholesterol levels but your triglycerides.

You will still find a lot misinformation in the vegan world as well as other places. Really, the only decent nutritional information out there regarding how horrible sugar is either in the latest nutrition research and some paleo blogs.

Why the Campaign to Stop America's Obesity Crisis Keeps Failing

There is an alternative theory, one that has also been around for decades but that the establishment has largely ignored. This theory implicates specific foods—refined sugars and grains—because of their effect on the hormone insulin, which regulates fat accumulation. If this hormonal-defect hypothesis is true, not all calories are created equal, as the conventional wisdom holds. And if it is true, the problem is not only controlling our impulses, but also changing the entire American food economy and rewriting our beliefs about what constitutes a healthy diet.

Oddly, this nutrient-hormone-fat interaction is not particularly controversial. You can find it in medical textbooks as the explanation for why our fat cells get fat. But the anti-obesity establishment doesn’t take the next step: that fat fat cells lead to fat humans. In their eyes, yes, insulin regulates how much fat gets trapped in your fat cells, and the kinds of carbohydrates we eat today pretty much drive up your insulin levels. But, they conclude, while individual cells get fat that way, the reason an entire human gets fat has nothing to do with it. We’re just eating too much.

The health of your brain depends not only on how much (or little) fat you eat but on what kind it is. Intellectual performance requires the specific type of fat found most commonly in fish, known as omega-3 fatty acids. Even diets that adhere to commonly recommended levels of fats, but the wrong kind, can undermine intelligence. What makes this finding awkward is that certain oils widely touted as healthy for the heart are especially troublesome for the mind.

Omega-3s are known to be particularly crucial constituents of the outer membrane of brain cells. It is through the fat-rich cell membrane that all nerve signals must pass. In addition, as learning and memory forge new connections between nerve cells, new membranes must be formed to sheathe them. All brain cell membranes continuously need to refresh themselves with a new supply of fatty acids. A growing amount of research suggests that the omega-3s are best suited for optimal brain function.

Natalie Portman Sexy Pregnant Ex-Vegan

I'm dying from a load of work, but I had to post this.

I recently learned that Natalie Portman recently started eating eggs and dairy because she craved them during pregnancy. Good! (Update: I found out that she has had her baby. I don't keep up with celebrity news. Don't give a hoot. But anyway, this post is still relevant.)

Apparently it's not uncommon for vegans to crave eggs during pregnancy. The forum women assume that it's a craving for protein. They suggest to you eat more tofu scramble with sulfur salt and nutritional yeast. Since I craved eggs during pregnancy (when I was ovo-lacto), I think that it's more than just simply protein. I ate eight eggs a day and couldn't get enough of them. Prior to pregnancy, I didn't eat eggs all that often.

What is it with eggs that would benefit a growing brain and body inside your body?
Arachidonic acid is one of the most abundant fatty acids in the brain, and is present in similar quantities to docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The two account for approximately 20% of its fatty acid content.[12] Like DHA, neurological health is reliant upon sufficient levels of arachidonic acid. Among other things, arachidonic acid helps to maintain hippocampal cell membrane fluidity.[13] It also helps protect the brain from oxidative stress by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma.[14] ARA also activates syntaxin-3 (STX-3), a protein involved in the growth and repair of neurons.[15] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arachidonic_acid
Choline. I think this helped the pregnancy induced brain fog that I had. Brain food to the max! You're growing a brain in your womb!

Choline and its metabolites are needed for three main physiological purposes: structural integrity and signaling roles for cell membranes, cholinergic neurotransmission (acetylcholine synthesis), and a major source for methyl groups via its metabolite, trimethylglycine (betaine) which participates in the S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) synthesis pathways.

Most common signs of choline deficiencies are fatty liver and hemorrhagic kidney necrosis. Dietary intake of a choline full diet can reduce the severity of the deficiency. Eggs produced by hens fed a diet of greens and insects contain higher levels of n−3 fatty acids than those produced by chickens fed corn or soybeans.[122] In addition to feeding chickens insects and greens, fish oils may be added to their diets to increase the n-3 fatty acid concentrations in eggs.[123]

The addition of flax and canola seeds to the diets of chickens, both good sources of alpha-linolenic acid, increases the omega-3 content of the eggs, predominantly DHA.[124]

The addition of green algae or seaweed to the diets boosts the content of DHA and EPA content, which are the forms of omega-3 approved by the FDA for medical claims. So I'm finally watching Vegucated

I like the documentary for entertainment value.

I think T. Colin Campbell would be better off following Fuhrman's recipes, which looked like they were loaded with fat. Fuhrman's patients must be really unhealthy ;-) One recipe was loaded with macadamia nuts. I am getting Fuhrman's book today for the recipes.

A few weeks ago, I blended pre-soaked macadamia nuts, basil, lemon juice, onions, garlic and nutritional yeast and slapped it on top of some quinoa noodles topped with garlic marinara sauce. Holy shit! This was a modified recipe by Alison "Awesome chef" Rivers Samson I found online. She's also created this recipe for macaroni and cheese which uses potatoes, carrots, onions, garlic, cashews, lemon juice, and dijon mustard. Honestly, she's a genius! Next time, I'm going to remove the potatoes and use more nuts.

Also regarding T. Colin Campbell, I would like to sneak in about 2 tablespoons of coconut fat into his daily diet along with a drive by squirting of my DHA algae oil into his mouth. Oh, the nastiness I think of!

My Mother's Experience with Low Dose Nalrexone and Her Glioblastoma IV Brain Cancer

I was diagnosed with a stage four glioblastoma [brain cancer] in February of last year [2011]. After a full course of chemo and radiation, in mid November, I learned about an inexpensive prescription medication, low dose naltrexone. Prior to starting this medication, I was deteriorating. I required a walker and could go only short distances. I had significant memory loss. With all the standard treatment, I was given 10 months to live. The average prediction is 14 months, even after excision, 3.2 cm of tumor remained. After I learned about and obtained a script for low dose naltrexone I gradually regained my ability to walk normally, without a walker, my thinking became clearer. In short, I regained function.

On the morning of Saturday, 12 February, 2011, my mother, an RN, was working on her nursing notes when she briefly lost consciousness and became disoriented. She dialed 911.

The surgeon excised what he could of a 5.4 cm tumor on Monday, 14 February. Her diagnosis was a grade four Glioblastoma brain tumor (GBM). This is a very aggressive type of brain cancer.

The standard treatment for a GBM involves waiting four to six weeks after surgery and then taking the oral chemo drug, Temodar (temozolomide), for 42 days while undergoing radiation, five days a week for six weeks. Temodar is continued five days a month for six months.

According to the study “MGMT Gene Silencing and Benefit from Temozolomide in Glioblastoma” published in the New England Journal of Medicine, about 45% of the 206 patients benefited by using Temodar. It extends life for about five extra months if you have a heritable trait called “silencing of the MGMT/AGT gene”. The median survival is 14 months.

John, our Chinese Medicine practitioner (M.Ac., L.Ac.), is very familiar with GBMs. He urgently wanted my mother to get the MGMT test done on a biopsy of her tumor. I pulled out all the stops to make it happen, despite objections from my mother’s oncologist, who said that Temodar was her only option for treatment at this stage — regardless of whether or not she would benefit. She did not get the test.

John sent a protocol of herbs and vitamins designed to protect mom’s DNA from the damage from chemo and boost her immune system before, during, and after chemotherapy. He also had her remove all sugar and sweets. Cancer cells feed on fructose according to recent research.

Throughout seven months of chemo and radiation, my mother took Dexamethasone, a steroid, to keep the swelling down, and Kepra, to prevent seizures. Every day, I served her smoothies consisting of super green food, Chinese herbs, protein powder, good fats, broad spectrum probiotics, and digestive enzymes. She also took a lot of vitamins and additional herbs. During this time, she didn’t catch any viruses or get thrush.

Near the end of seven months of chemo, mom weaned herself off of Dexamethasone by taking it down a sliver a day. She is extremely sensitive to steroids. She also stopped taking Kepra because she didn’t like the way it made her feel. Her MRIs showed no progression. However, the seven months of chemo had caused negative side effects: her bowels stopped working for a week and she had "chemo brain", a lay term for being very cognitively foggy. In addition, she was frequently nauseous and I could barely get her to eat, drink, or take any pills.

Mom ended her Temodar in September, 2011. She got an MRI in on 3 October. It indicated no progression of the tumor and no new tumors. By the end of October, however, mom was falling apart. She could barely walk, think, or function. Because her tumor is in the left parietal lobe, her right side was affected the most. She said it felt like it belonged to someone else and it was heavy. She refused to take any steroids.

In early November, mom’s health was even worse. She wanted no more standard treatment. Our family started emailing back and forth about beginning hospice care.

I prayed to my beloved spiritual master, Meher Baba (1894-1969), on 8 November 2011, “I can’t do anything and I’m helpless and hopeless. If it is your wish to help her, please do so. I hand her over to you, come what may.” It was a sincere prayer from the core of my being.

The next day, I received a short email forwarded from a friend. The email read that we should check out Low Dose Naltrexone, accompanied by a link to LDNInfo.org. I strongly felt that this was important and called a close family friend who is a retired MD. Being a former ER doctor, he was familiar with Naltrexone as well as other opioid antagonists, but he still had to research it.

Within 9 days after that email, Mom received LDN from Skip’s Pharmacy in Boca Raton, Florida. On 18 November, she started taking a dose of 1.5 mg for two weeks. After two weeks, she raised her dose to 3 mg. Within two or three days of starting the 3 mg dose, she improved DRAMATICALLY. She stopped using her walker and her cognition improved. After two weeks, she raised to a maintenance dose of 4.5 mg each night. She will take this for the rest of her life.

In mid February, Mom had another MRI which showed no progression of her original tumor, but it indicated that a 1.6 cm new tumor had formed outside the surgical bed.

My gut feeling is that this is a tumor that grew from the end of September, when she ended chemo, until Mom started taking the 3 mg dose of LDN. While my “gut feeling” track record is 100%, I also did some research and found that many people report that after chemo it appears that GBMs grow very, very rapidly, tripling in size in just a few weeks.

Mom’s radiation oncologist said that based on her cognitive ability, her physical activity, and other health factors, her MRI didn’t match up with what he was observing. He recommended no treatment and wanted to know more about LDN. He is going to give her another MRI in May. Mom’s main oncologist wanted her to start taking Avastin and was very arrogant about LDN.

Today is the 17th of April, 2012. Mom is very active. She cleans the yard, clips the trees, cleans the house, hauls stuff out of the garage, reads, watches movies, and walks 1.1 miles a day. You would not guess that she has an aggressive brain cancer.

David Gluck, MD stated, “LDN is absolutely unique. And that's part of its problem, in that it's a brand new paradigm, a new way of thinking of treatment. Instead of the medication actually doing the work, LDN goes into the body and essentially tricks the body by forcing it to double and triple its output of endorphins and metenkephalin, also known as opioid growth factor (OGF). Those endorphins and metenkephalin, in turn, cause the immune system to strengthen. A nice way to think about LDN is that it is not like any other medication whatsoever. It is a way to strengthen the immune system.”

I view LDN as a lifeboat with many amenities, but you can add more with nutrition, exercise, and sunshine.

Here’s some of the various nutrients mom takes: Chlorella, Spirulina, Alpha Lipoic Acid, B-complex, multi-vitamins (from whole foods), melatonin, unDenatured whey from pastured dairy cows, high sulforaphane foods like organic broccoli sprouts and organic sprouted kale, N-acetyl-cysteine, CoQ10 (a water and fat soluble kind), Alpha GPC, Phosphatidyl Serine, D3, K1, K2 (MK-7), Mmega 3 DHA/EPA from micro algae, Immucare 1 and Immucare 2, and others.

Mom eats no meat from factory farmed animals/Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO). If she eats meat, it’s only from grass/range fed animals. All conventional meat, dairy, and eggs have the number one source of dioxins, according to the EPA.

Mom also consumes a cooked mixture of organic maple syrup and organic bicarbonate of soda. She says this has helped her a lot. I did notice that after a few days of eating this mixture, her fine motor skills improved on her right side. Mom claims this mixture has helped the most, in addition to alkaline foods and drinks. I think mom’s improvement is from the increased levels of Glutathione as well as the health properties of Chlorella and Spirulina from clean, microcystin free sources. I don’t argue with her, perhaps everything is working together.

In closing, I would like to offer a few words of advice based on our experiences: Think for yourself. Research everything. If something doesn’t feel right to you, you will be stressed on some level, which will increase your cortisol. That won’t help your immune system. Listen to your own gut, not someone else’s. Have a neutral attitude, if a positive one is too much of a stretch. Doctors are not omniscient.

Now, a team of researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City has uncovered a prime site of activity for the molecule, bringing them closer to solving that mystery.

Melatonin and cancer progression (or lack of)

Sharing some stuff regarding cancer prevention that I have in my collection:

For over 15 years the National Cancer Institute at the NIH, Cancer.gov, has known that melatonin is effective against cancer. Why didn't the oncologist share this with us when my mother got brain cancer? Could it be that 20 mg of Melatonin is about $11 a month and Temodar is $200.00 a pill and she got 102 pills? Hummm... Plus Temodar gives doctors repeat business. Mom went to the ER twice because the chemo shut down her bowels.

By the way, apparently marijuana increases melatonin significantly. I have not seen any studies on this, just so-called "common knowledge" stuff on advocates for medical marijuana. Though, they might have a point. I'm in FL, pot is illegal. We had our share of pot smoking in the 70s and 80s and are not fond of weed anymore.

The prognosis of brain glioblastoma is still very poor and the median survival time is generally less than 6 months. At present, no chemotherapy has appeared to influence its prognosis. The study included 30 patients with glioblastoma, who were randomized to receive RT alone (60 Gy) or RT plus MLT (20 mg/daily orally) until disease progression. Both the survival curve and the percent of survival at 1 year were significantly higher in patients treated with RT plus MLT than in those receiving RT alone (6/14 vs. 1/16). Moreover, RT or steroid therapy-related toxicities were lower in patients concomitantly treated with MLT. However, other findings reported in the same paper show that you can't change enterotype overnight. The team sequestered 10 volunteers in a hospital and fed half of them a fixed diet very high in fat and low in fiber; the other half of the subjects had the opposite menu. The researchers found that the bacterial populations began to shift within both groups, with some species becoming more common and others less common, but people had the same enterotype when the study ended after 10 days. If switching gut enterotype is possible, the team concludes, it may take a long-term dietary intervention.

What is the Paleo diet for a person with Asian heritage?

Most of India, that is those who are not affluent, eat lentils and rice a lot. My husband just corrected me, he lived in India for 14 years, he said that most of the poor eat millet (bhakri) and vegetables. The Asians in China and Japan, eat rice and noodles as far as I know. Isn't a paleo diet relative to one's ancestors?

When we discuss Paleo eating, are we discussing our common ancestors in Africa? Anybody? I have no idea.

I have noticed with myself that carbs coming from any color veggie except white (with the exception of cauliflower), brown GABA rice, and sprouted lentils have not made any impact my weight. However, anything with sugar, no matter whether it's fruit juice or a vegan cookie, these things do have a negative impact. I also feel sluggish.

This is a story, that for me, really drives home that there is no one-size-fits all diet. However, if the microbes and enzymes are in the people, and there's no genetic issue, people can adapt to any diet (sans the sugar, franken food, and factory farming, and GMO crap).

I have a couple theories that will never be proven:

My theory of how early man was able to eat foods with phytic acid and not have it block minerals: our early selves had the phytase enzyme.

My theory of how early man was able to convert ALA from nuts to DHA: healthy levels of the enzyme that does this conversion. Also, no sugar and high levels of Omega 6 to thwart the effort.

The issue is that the same enzymes that convert ALA, also convert LA into its long chain metabolite known as arachidonic acid (AA 20:4ω-6). Given this scenario it is understandable that diets high in omega6 fatty acids can influence, and in reality reduce, the conversion of short chain omega3 fatty acid into its long chain metabolites. http://www.azchia.com/ala_conversion_epa_dpa_dha.htm
You might be aware that a few studies have shown that we convert 0.5% up to 9% - 13%, women doing better than men. I doubt it's estrogen related as some scientists hypothesized. I think it's because women tend to eat healthier than men.

I would love to have the money to check the gut microbes in any healthy long term vegan. It would explain a lot, I think.

It's expensive, I bet. A comprehensive nutritional test my mother had, including her Krebs cycle, was $1400.00. It didn't check her intestinal microbes. All it did was just let us know that she needs more pancreatic enzymes among other things. The MD/ND also told us that we need to rotate our probiotics and change brands every 2 months because we get used certain strains and they are not effective.

I hope that everyone is becoming aware of the HUGE cholesterol con-job we've all been suffering from. Sugar is implicated in heart disease and it plays a big role in hypertension too.

Without having any scientific proof, I have no problem with this statement:

There's very, very few studies on how beneficial cinnamon and curcumin are for controlling blood sugar. The lack of studies doesn't represent that they're not effective.

Cancer cells slurp up fructose, US study finds and some interesting studies regarding cancer and pH

Here's the link on fructose causing cancer cells to go wild. What? Only one. Yes, only one. We're lucky to get one.

If you have a mother who has cancer with only a 1% chance of survival, there's nowhere else to go but way out of the box. There you can run across some pretty nutty things, but inside the box is chemo, radiation, and arrogance. Then hospice. Thankfully, I was out of the vegan box before she was diagnosed.

In the course of reading a lot of holistic health books, blogs, and forums to find something to help my mother, sugar came up a lot.

"Sugar feeds cancer" I saw it everywhere.

Now, what the hell do you eat for fun? Freeze some berries and bananas (just not 30 of them!) and blend. Add some coconut meat or an avocado and lemon juice. That's one idea. You can get very clever, just don't juice your fruit. Eat the fruit blended so you still have the fiber to slow down the impact on your blood sugar.

German Otto Warburg, Ph.D., the 1931 Nobel laureate in medicine, first discovered that cancer cells have a fundamentally different energy metabolism compared to healthy cells.

How Stress Influences Disease: Study Reveals Inflammation as the Culprit

A research team led by Carnegie Mellon University's Sheldon Cohen has found that chronic psychological stress is associated with the body losing its ability to regulate the inflammatory response.
